Technology Safety for Survivors

Technology is the abuser's modern toolkit: shared accounts, location sharing, family plans, and apps installed without your knowledge all create a surveillance net. This page explains the common vectors and how to close them — because a case is only as safe as the devices that carry it.

The common vectors

Shared iCloud or Google accounts expose messages, photos, and location. Family plans let the account holder see call and text records. 'Find My' and similar features broadcast your location. Cars, smart speakers, and even children's devices can be listening points. Assume the abuser knows everything the device knows — until you check.

  • Shared accounts expose messages, photos, and location — separate them
  • Family plans expose call and text records — get your own plan or a prepaid line
  • Location sharing: disable 'Find My' and similar on every device
  • New email, new passwords, two-factor authentication — for your legal life

Communicating with your attorney

Your communications with your lawyer are privileged and confidential — but only as confidential as the device. Use a device the abuser has never accessed for legal calls and messages. If that is impossible today, say so at the first meeting: we will communicate through a channel that is safe for your situation.

    Safety first, always

In immediate danger, call 911. For protection planning and next steps, call (619) 730-7884 — free and confidential, through whatever channel is safe for you.
